Abstract

We present the results of electrical resistivity p(T) (1.6 ≤ T ≤ 300 K), high field magnetization M(H) (0 ≤ H ≤ 23 T) and dc "susceptibility" MIH (H = 0.01 T) measurements on the well annealed polycrystalline GdPdIn and TmPdIn samples. In difference with the other members of the RPdIn series with heavy rare-earth elements, single magnetic phase transition was observed for both Gd and Tm compounds. GdPdIn is a ferromagnet with the Curie temperature TC of about 101.5 K. Relatively weak magnetic irreversibility is observed in the magnetically ordered state. At 4.2 K, its saturation field is determined to be 15 T, and almost no hysteresis effect can be observed. TmPdIn was found to show antiferromagnetic behavior with the low Néel temperature TN = 2.7 K. At 1.85 K, a metamagnetic transition appears in M(H) curve at the field H ∼ 0.45 T. It is the solitary antiferromagnet in heavy rare-earth compounds RPdIn. For both GdPdIn and TmPdIn, the electrical resistivity p(T) increases rapidly with increasing T from low temperature, illustrates an evident anomaly at TC or TN and then increases in a non-linear manner at high temperatures. The magnetic properties of GdPdIn and TmPdIn are discussed and compared with those of other RPdIn compounds.
